Veterinary Science

Overview

Our Mission: Veterinary Science prepares students for employment or advanced training in the veterinary science industry.

Hands-on Project Based Learning as well as Scholarship and Internship Opportunities

Eligibility

  • Minimum of a "C" overall GPA
  • Disciplinary records must reflect no more than minimal of minor occurrences.
  • Upon acceptance, Students must maintain at least an annual 3.0 GPA in the core academy course requirements (courses that make up the core of the non-academic offerings for the academy focus) or achieve at least an overall 2.0 GPA. Failure to maintain the appropriate GPA at the end of the school year will result in the student being withdrawn from the academy and re-scheduled into non-academy classes for the following school year (for students whose residential school is the location of the academy), or the student being withdrawn from Tate High School and re-assigned to the high school in the appropriate residential zone.

  • Animal first aid
  • Vet equipment and instrument use
  • Identify parts and functions of animals
  • Study of internal and external parasites
  • Study of the vet science industry

 

Veterinary Science 2:
  • Restrain and control of animals
  • Vet science terminology
  • Identify breeds of several species
  • Grooming of animals
  • Study of animal overpopulation
  • Study of exotic animals
  • Study of exotic animal captivity

 

Veterinary Science 3:
  • Study of safety precautions
  • Study of OHSA relating to the animal industry
  • Study of pesticide poisoning/labeling
  • Safe mixing and application of non-restricted chemicals
  • Pesticide application safety procedures
  • Use of tools, equipment and instruments in vet science industry
  • Recognizing animal behaviors
  • Study of animal digestive systems
  • Study of the reproductive system and breeding of selected animals
  • Study of preventive medicine and disease control

 

Veterinary Science 4:
  • Study of human-animal bond
  • Study and interpretation of animal-related laws
  • Genetic Principles
  • Development of a Mendel Chart
  • Dominate and recessive gene study
  • Marketing study of the vet industry
  • Sanitation techniques for animal care
  • Preventative medicine and quarantine for disease control
